ABOUT THE ARTIST...

Christine Heegaard was born in Paris, France and lived there for about twenty five years before moving to Switzerland, the Netherlands, and finally to Palo Alto, California. In Paris, she studied arts at the Ecole du Louvre, and while in the Netherlands met Dutch painter Gisele d'Ailly in Amsterdam.
When she arrived in California, with her husband and two sons, she first began to paint mosaic on wood, but quickly specialized in stone-mosaic and sculpture. She always loved to create art that can be touched, carried, and used. She was a student of mosaicist Donna Billik in Mendocino, where she learned to add three dimensions to her mosaic creations.
She also participated in a workshop taught by mosaic artists Dmitry Grudsky, Gérard Brand, Verdiano Marzi. S
he went to Ravenna to particicipate in a workshop at the Mosaic Art School. Her work has been sold in Bay Area museum shops, private exhibits, Open Studios and craft fairs. She also enjoys working with clients on commissioned art, and shares her passion with others and teaches mosaic in her home studio.

Artist's Statement

Since childhood,
my eyes have always been captivated by colors and shapes,
my heart has been moved by mountains and lakes,
my brain has been calmed by puzzles and games.
Mosaic combines all this: using nature's elements like glass, rocks, sand, colors to make shapes and forms, matching pieces for unity or chaos.

Mosaic is a building-game with few rules: you choose how to combine the colors and material you have in hand, how to arrange them, where to start, where to finish, you choose to grout or not to, and which color grout -or colors-

Mosaic is alive, warm in the sun, cold in the shade. After more than five thousand years, it is still evolving: old and new techniques, old and new materials.

I often have mirror in my pieces, so the viewer can take and give back this liveliness, by seeing himself in the piece, with the mood he wears that day, giving movement and soul to the piece.

Mosaic is sensual; you can touch it, caress it, weigh it, detail it, use it, reuse it and abuse it.
Mosaic is the only thing -with my family!- that keeps me awake
